Op deze site kun je met behulp van Google Maps de olievlek in de Golf van Mexico eender waar op aarde voorstellen.

Think of a horizonless projection as a much more advanced paper map of the city you might get from a tourist kiosk, the type that shows major landmark.

“Imagine a person standing at a street corner. The projection begins with a three-dimensional representation of the immediate environment,” Jack Schulze says. “Close buildings are represented normally, and the viewer himself is shown in the third person, exactly where she stands."

“As the model bends from sideways to top-down in a smooth join, more distant parts of the city are revealed in plan view. The projection connects the viewer’s local environment to remote destinations normally out of sight.”

Zou het niet handig zijn als er op trams en bussen, in plaats van de huidige netplannen, in real-time weergegeven werd waar men zich bevond? Nooit meer vol spanning uit het raampje turen naar de volgende halte, of moeten rondvragen of we halte zus en zo al voorbij zijn. Ook in de metro zou dit systeem veel voordelen hebben. En met een beetje GPS-tracking is dat toch niet zo moeilijk te realiseren.

The NY Times have come up with a fascinating interactive map that you can play with to check out the medal counts by country for every Summer Games since the modern Olympic Games began in 1896.

The size of the bubbles in the geographic view correlate to the number of medals won. Mouse over any bubble and the actual number of golds, silvers and bronzes won is displayed. Dragging the tab through all the years reveals historical blips. The massive Eastern Bloc showings for the 1980 and 1988 Games deflated in 1984 when they boycotted the Los Angeles Games. Also revealed is the emergence of Japan and more recently China in the international sports area over several decades.

Paper maps are a pain. They’re clunky, get torn easily, and never seem to fold back the way they’re supposed to. Sure, you can always turn to a laptop or iPhone to get a digital copy, but most transit websites are painfully slow and difficult to navigate. What’s a wandering traveler to do?

Urban Mapping, a San Francisco based company founded in 2001, may have developed the next generation of maps. At least, they’ve made some maps that look cool and fold up nicely, which is enough for me. Each map consists of a layered plastic material, which comes together to form three (or more) maps in one. Each map appears depending on the angle that you view the sheet – it looks a lot like those toys you used to find in Cracker Jack Boxes, and uses the same (albeit improved) printing technique.

An animation showing edits to the OpenStreetMap.org project during 2008. OpenStreetMap is a wiki-style map of the world and this animation displays a white flash each time a way is entered or updated. Some edits are a result of a physical local survey by a contributor with a GPS unit and taking notes, other edits are done remotely using aerial photography or out-of-copyright maps, and some are bulk imports of official data.

OpenStreetMap started in 2004 and the rate of contributions is accelerating with four times as many people contributing to the project in 2008 compared to 2007. During the year, edits were made by some 20,000 individuals and there were bulk imports of data for many places, including the USA, India, Italy and Belarus which are clearly visible in the animation. Het gebruik van stadskaarten is niet altijd eenvoudig. Zeker wanneer je op reis bent, en af en toe moet stoppen om op de kaart te kijken, is het opvouwen van de kaart geen pretje. Veel mensen pakken pas een kaart als het niet anders kan. De Italiaanse vormgever Emanuele Pizzolorusso bedacht het idee van de voorgekreukte kaart, de Crumpled City Maps. Ze zijn zacht maar sterk, waterbestendig en geschikt om als prop mee te nemen in tas, koffer of rugzak. Vooral handig is het feit dat je de kaart nu kunt vouwen met de gewenste locatie 'bovenop'.

Dit filmje geeft weer hoe het vliegverkeer in Europa terug op gang kwam na de uitbarsting van de vulkaan Eyjafjallajökull.

 DEINZE/BRUSSEL - CLOSE-UPVRIJWILLIGERS STELLEN KAARTEN SAMEN VOOR SITE OPEN STREET MAP De website Open Street Map laat mensen toe zelf een kaart van hun buurt, dorp, stad of land samen te stellen. Mét hun favoriete boom of bankje erbij. Precies daarmee is een groepje enthousiaste Vlaamse 'mappers' bezig. Afgelopen weekend streek het gezelschap neer in Deinze. 

Opening in April 2010, Magnificent Maps showcases the British Library's unique collection of large-scale display maps, many of which have never been exhibited before, and demonstrates why maps are about far more than geography.

The exhibition will include large-scale, impressive maps from the 1400s to the present day, including the largest atlas in the world, the Klencke Atlas of 1660. It will suggest the settings in which they might originally have been seen – from the palace to the schoolroom and the home – reveal the themes that unite them, and highlight the sheer artistry that was involved in their production.

Magnificent Maps will also explore the reason behind the construction of these visually arresting works of art. Which range from maps used for indoctrination or expressions of local pride to irrefutable statements of power and illustrations of rulers' spheres of influence.

Om het Internationaal Voedingsfestival van Syndney in de spotlights te zetten werden de vlaggen van de deelnemende landen gemaakt uit de lokale specialiteiten.

Heb je altijd al willen weten wat er zou gebeuren als je een atoombom op je 'lievelings' stad, prof. of klasgenoot zou droppen? Op deze site kun je dat met behulp van Google Maps uitproberen, zonder daarvoor van achter je pc uit te moeten komen.

Op deze site zijn een aantal nutteloze bouwwerken in België in kaart gebracht. Bruggen midden in velden, autosnelwegen van amper 3 km lang, of hele dokken die uitgegraven werden om dan gewoon terug dicht te gooien. En dat allemaal mooi voorgesteld op een google maps kaartje, want anders zou de meetman de meetman niet zijn!

Deze satellietfoto werd genomen op 17 april 2010, en toont duidelijk de aswolk die van Eyjafjallajökull zuidwaarts waait.

Canada is the second largest country on the face of the Earth, but USA’s northern neighbor has a lot to brag about. Out of all the natural lakes in the world, more than 50 percent are situated in Canada.

According to wikipedia, More than 60 percent of the world’s lakes are in Canada. I wasn’t able to find the total number, but considering that only Finland has 187 888  lakes (thanks Arttu), the number must be huge.
