Job opening Konstanz:

The University of Konstanz is one of the nine Universities of Excellence in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Zukunftskolleg invites applications for a PhD position as part of an externally funded interdisciplinary project titled "Silvretta Historica" (Dr. Karsten Lambers) at the Department of Computer and Information Science, Chair of Multimedia Signal Processing (Prof. D. Saupe) for 3 years starting Oct. 1, 2010.

The goal of the Konstanz sub-project and the topic of the PhD thesis will be the development of algorithms to detect archaeological sites and features in high-resolution satellite images based on their spectral and/or geometric properties. The results are aimed at assisting archaeological field work. The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of image processing and pattern recognition and experience in Matlab, C/C++ and possibly Java. He or she will furthermore be required to participate in field work in the Alps and should have a good command of English and German. Upon application, the successful candidate may become a member of the PhD program "Explorative Analysis and Visualization of Large Information Spaces (Prof. D. Saupe) as well as an associate member of the Zukunftskolleg.
